Ferenc Benkő (1745–1816) Calvinistic pastor and teacher in Nagyenyed was author of the first two mineralogical books written in Hungarian, both of special importance in the history of Hungarian science and language. The first book (1784) was a translation but the second one, Magyar Minerologia (“Hungarian mineralogy”, 1786) was an original work, an up-to-date system of mineralogy. In addition to minerals in the modern sense, fossils are also discussed in this book. The brief, clear descriptions are completed with lots of locality data (mainly from Transylvania).
